Rates of drug overdose deaths are rising in nonmetropolitan (rural) areas, surpassing rates in metropolitan (urban) areas, according to a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This report analyzed trends in illicit drug use and illicit drug use disorders from 2003-2014, and drug overdose deaths from 1999-2015 in urban and rural areas. Understanding differences in illicit drug use, illicit drug use disorders, and drug overdose deaths in urban and rural areas can help public health professionals to identify, monitor, and prioritize responses. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown made a stop in Cleveland Friday afternoon to encourage people to get rid of their unnecessary prescription pills in an effort to tackle Ohio's opioid epidemic. Brown, who has advocated for additional funding for treatment and addiction prevention, said the pill buyback program is one of the safest and immediate ways to get rid of dangerous prescription pills. WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Another epicenter alert has been issued in Trumbull County after more than a dozen additional overdoses happened overnight. “The anxiety level ramped up,” said Linda Spies, whose son is in recovery. Last night, 15 people overdosed, bringing the total number to 49 overdoses — including five deaths — since last Friday, September 15. The Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board said multiple doses of the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone have been required to bring people back. CLEVELAND - With the opioid epidemic considered a national emergency, News 5 has learned the answer to this scourge may be here in Cleveland. The president's opioid task force is coming here to look for some answers. Behind the wall of the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center lies a possible solution to a national crisis. “I think the lessons we have learned can be duplicated in the private sector,” said Medical Director Susan Fuehrer.
