University Heights, Ohio – John Carroll University is now offering a certificate program to train counselors to treat people who have substance-abuse disorders.
The program is open to those who have an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree and are seeking to enter the field of counseling. Due to the opioid epidemic, Ohio has a growing demand for counselors trained to treat people suffering from chemical dependency and substance abuse, the college said.
The curriculum complements the work done in the behavioral sciences, criminal justice, nursing, and social work. The program prepares students to become either a licensed chemical dependency counselor or a licensed independent chemical dependency counselor.
The program consists of five courses that can be taken up to two at a time. The program can be completed in as little as three semesters. The field experience component includes 220 hours of paid or supervised internship hours, which fulfills part of the State of Ohio’s 2,000 required hours for license eligibility.
Those seeking credit for the courses will pay the undergraduate-tuition rate. Those not seeking credit will pay the continuing-education rate.
Applications are currently being accepted for the summer session. Classes begin May 14.
