Ohio is facing a major opioid overdose crisis. Nearly seven Ohioans a day are lost in heroin and opioid-related deaths. Many schools have dealt with the fallout from this crisis. Today, we're announcing a push to do more. This year, many of our schools will plan and implement design challenges on understanding and eliminating Ohio's opioid crisis. Throughout the year, we'll be posting resources and events to support our schools through the process. "We call on OHIO GOVERNOR KASICH to declare a medical state of emergency to aid people trying to get into detox and substance abuse treatment programs for heroin and opium use. Why? Summit Alcohol, Drug, Mental Health Board to add 20 new treatment beds for opiate addiction
AKRON, Ohio – Beginning Oct. 1, the County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board will add 20 residential treatment beds for males with opiate or heroin addiction at the IBH Addiction Recovery Center in the Portage Lakes. The ADM board of directors recently approved $3.2 million to address the county's alarming drug overdose numbers. Adding the beds is the first of several system enhancements planned. Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson calls it a "clear and present danger." The Washington Post, casting Ohio as ground zero for the drug in the United States, says a tiny dose a fraction of the weight of a paper clip could send 500 people to the morgue. It's been showing up in Columbus, Cincinnati and maybe Akron. And unlike heroin, it is so lethal -- 10,000 times more potent than morphine -- that the naloxone antidotes used to save lives in heroin overdoses may not work.
