CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cocaine is becoming more prevalent in Cuyahoga County’s drug overdose deaths, and officials say that’s largely because drug dealers are mixing it with the powerful opioid fentanyl. Data from the Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office shows cocaine was a factor in approximately 45 percent of drug overdose deaths last year, the highest percentage in more than a decade. February 11, 2019 In the nation’s opioid epidemic, the carnage is far from over. A new projection of opioid overdose death rates suggests that even if there is steady progress in reducing prescription narcotics abuse nationwide, the number of fatal overdoses — which reached 47,600 in 2017 — will rise sharply in the coming years. February 7, 2019 CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson, today issued a public health warning , stating the Cuyahoga County Regional Forensic Science Laboratory has seen a significant increase of seized carfentanil (powder and tablets) tested over the last month. Carfentnail, a synthetic opioid and large animal sedative, is extremely potent and unsafe for human use.
